STEM Super Saturday
STEM SUPER SATURDAY GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND!
We kicked off our fourth annual STEM Super Saturday event on Friday, March 10th with a special presentation from Dr. Kjell Lindgren, a NASA astronaut who spent 141 days in space and participated in two spacewalks. He shared how his personal goals helped him achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut. His visit was a great segue to the big event on Saturday morning. This year nearly 400 TK-5th grade families attended and explored careers and projects in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Families participated in teacher-led lessons focused around engineering design challenges. Bud Carson and Zela Davis students participated in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Showcase, while HMSA students showcased their outstanding STEM program. Zela Davis was honored to host Vince Bertram, Ed.D, President and Chief Executive Officer of PLTW and his team at the event. Zela Davis and Bud Carson students were eager to share their PLTW projects and experiences with Dr. Bertram and his PLTW team.
Our Career Exploration Rooms were filled to capacity as students and families explored possible STEM career fields. Thank you to our new and returning partners: Boeing, JPL, From Scratch Bakers, SpaceX, Art 2 Grow On, Children’s Art Center, Inc., Lakeshore Learning, and West Basin Municipal Water District. In addition, this year we partnered with Two Bit Circus to add three more engaging exhibits that challenged students to work collaboratively to complete the “Ultimate Recycling Machine” and the “STEAMopolis Challenge.” Thank you to all of our volunteers and participants for making STEM Super Saturday 2017 the best event yet!
