Space X Engineers Visit ZD
Zela Davis Girls in Engineering.
The girls met 3 days each week, before school to design and build mock satellites.
Our STEM intervention teacher, Mrs. Franklin, did an outstanding job and even arranged one-on-one time with real rocket engineers from SpaceX to guide them through the process. With her assistance, as well as Mr. Logue our other STEM committee chairperson, our group of girls were prepared and confident to actually visit SpaceX in order to show and tell their design projects and get feedback from women engineers -who manage entire departments in the rocket design and build process at SpaceX. These girls had an awesome experience, which will certainly have a lasting impact, and perhaps guide them into future careers in engineering. Zelas Davis is very proud of our students' responses and the way they represented Hawthorne School District.

Boeing Donates Back Packs
Boeing has graciously providing Zela Davis School with over a 125 backpacks filled with school supplies. Each student was able to enter in a raffle to have a chance to win a backpack by telling us why they are excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).
Zela Davis teachers are learning how to use our new MakerBot 3D Printer. This technology is sure to empower our students to become the innovators of tomorrow.
Bud Carson PLTW Students Visit ZD
The PTLW Project Lead the Way program provides transformative learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers. Zela Davis and Bud Carson have both partnered with PLTW to create an engaging, hands-on classroom environment and empower students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills they need to thrive. PLTW teachers like Ms. Andrade from BCMS and our own Ms. Troxel engage students in real-world learning everyday. Recently, BCMS students designed and created Apps for the iPad and then teamed up with ZD 2nd graders for beta tests in order to perfect them.
Health Workshop for ZD Parents
Zela Davis held an informative workshop with Nicole Boykin, LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse). Her presentations provide parents with the skills and resource aimed at improving the health of your family. Nearly 60 parents participated in the most recent workshop. We look forward to even more parents attending her next workshop.
Title 1 Parent Meeting
Our first Title I parent meeting of the 2016-2017 school year had a fantastic turnout, with 117 families in attendance!
The purpose of this title (Title I) is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and meet challenging state academic standards.
Zela Davis presents information to our parents and community regarding the Title I Schoolwide Program, in addition to the various interventions that we offer students in order to ensure that all students maximize their potential to achieve academic excellence.
