    Stem Saturday - Zela Davis

STEM Super Saturday Goes Above and Beyond!

We kicked off our fourth annual STEM Super Saturday event on Friday, March 10th with a special presentation from Dr. Kjell Lindgren, a NASA astronaut who spent 141 days in space and participated in two space walks. He shared how his personal goals helped him achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut. His visit was a great segue to the big event on Saturday morning. This year nearly 400 TK-5th grade families attended and explored careers and projects in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Families participated in teacher-led lessons focused around engineering design challenges. Bud Carson and Zela Davis students participated in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Showcase, while HMSA students showcased their outstanding STEM program. Zela Davis was honored to host Vince Bertram, Ed.D,  President and Chief Executive Officer of PLTW and his team at the event. Zela Davis and Bud Carson students were eager to share their PLTW projects and experiences with Dr. Bertram and his PLTW team.

Our Career Exploration Rooms were filled to capacity as students and families explored possible STEM career fields. Thank you to our new and returning partners: Boeing, JPL, From Scratch Bakers, SpaceX, Art 2 Grow On, Children’s Art Center, Inc., Lakeshore Learning, and West Basin Municipal Water District. In addition, this year we partnered with Two Bit Circus to add three more engaging exhibits that challenged students to work collaboratively to complete the “Ultimate Recycling Machine” and the “STEAMopolis Challenge.” Thank you to all of our volunteers and participants for making STEM Super Saturday 2017 the best event yet!

California's LAUNCH School of the Year Award

Zela Davis Elementary School has been selected by Project Lead the Way (PLTW) as California’s LAUNCH School of the Year. This prestigious award, the first of its kind to be bestowed by PLTW, was presented to Zela Davis staff at the annual California PLTW Conference in Riverside on January 24th. The conference drew attendees from across California and neighboring states and the school was recognized in front of an audience of over one thousand PLTW teachers and program advocates.

Zela Davis began implementing the PLTW program in 2015, with students from kindergarten through fifth grade engaging in activities such as coding, robotics, and various forms of scientific inquiry and exploration. Our goal is to create curiosity and spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. Through students’ experiences with PLTW and other STEM programs at Zela Davis, students now see themselves as future scientists, programmers, engineers, or mathematicians.
